The Lake County Maps Online web application (http://maps.lakecountyil.gov/mapsonline) is a cooperative project involving county departments and data partners at the federal and state levels. Coordinated by the GIS/Mapping Division of the Lake County Department of Information Technology, it is intended to serve not only the public, but also internal staff by providing Internet based viewing, reporting and printing capabilities for a wide range of geographic information. The application has succeeded at streamlining permit applications/reviews and assessment appeals. Many county staff rely on it to provide access to vital information needed in their daily work. It also promotes the transparency of county maintained information for the public, consultants and others doing business in Lake County. It is one of the most frequently visited sites on the County’s website available free of charge 24/7 to anyone with access to the Internet. Released to the public in December of 2012, initial traffic counts show a steady increase in the number of monthly visits. The entire application was developed in-house utilizing existing software and open source solutions. The website is powered by Esri's ArcGIS Server JavaScript API technology running on four load balanced SAN based virtual servers. The data is stored in ArcSDE on Microsoft SQL Server on another virtual server.
