Leadership from National Association of Counties Condemns Political Violence, Calls for Unity

TAMPA – Today from the National Association of Counties (NACo) Annual Conference in Hillsborough County, Fla., the organization’s leadership issued a statement in response to the attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump.

The statement issued by NACo President and Ramsey County, Minn. Commissioner Mary Jo McGuire; NACo First Vice President and Sonoma County, Calif. Supervisor James Gore; NACo Second Vice President and Wise County, Texas Judge J.D. Clark; NACo Immediate Past President and Will County, Ill. Board Member Denise Winfrey; NACo West Region Representative and Cascade County, Mont. Commissioner Joe Briggs; NACo Central Region Representative and Audrain County, Mo. Commissioner Tracy Graham; NACo South Region Representative and Roane County, Tenn. Commissioner Ron Berry; and NACo Northeast Region Representative and Erie County, N.Y. Executive Mark Poloncarz, reads: 

“County leaders know well the vulnerability that comes with public service. On behalf of the 3,069 counties, parishes and boroughs we are privileged to represent, we condemn in no uncertain terms the assassination attempt against former president Donald Trump.

“We wish those injured, including the former president, a full and speedy recovery, and offer our deepest condolences to the family of the person killed during yesterday’s terrible event.

“There is no place in our society for violence of any kind. As county leaders, we believe deeply in our democratic system of government, and know it depends on peace and civility.

“We call on county leaders, our intergovernmental partners, and the residents we proudly represent to decry violence, come together to restore civility, and move forward with a unified commitment to the level of respectful public discourse we know will help our communities and our country thrive.”
