WASHINGTON – America’s Counties this month are joining the National Association of Counties (NACo) in recognizing National County Government Month (NCGM). Throughout April, counties will honor the county workforce, educate residents about local programs and services and celebrate the county role in the intergovernmental partnership.
“National County Government Month is a celebration of all of America’s 3,069 counties,” said NACo President James Gore. “It has never felt more important to raise awareness about the many ways counties serve our communities and recognize the hard work of our county workforce – 3.6 million strong across the country.”
Since 1991, NCGM has helped to shine a light on how counties serve the everyday needs of residents. During the month, counties often host events like open houses and facility tours, issue proclamations and resolutions, speak with media, conduct informative social media campaigns, visit classrooms and more.
Counties will also work across platforms this month to share key data about county roles and responsibilities, including:
- Connecting communities by owning and maintaining 44 percent of public road miles and 38 percent of bridges.
- Keeping residents healthy by managing more than 1,900 public health departments and employing over 533,000 hospital and health care workers.
- Strengthening local economies by investing $17.7 billion annually in the construction, operation and support of housing projects.
- Fostering safe and vibrant communities by providing first responder services and engaging in all aspects of emergency management and disaster response and recovery.
- Supporting our nation’s veterans by funding County Veteran Services Officers in 29 states and the District of Columbia.
- Providing critical services on federal public lands in 62% of counties.
- Delivering extensive services to residents, ranging from building and maintaining parks, community centers and libraries to administering federal programs and elections.
“This month, we raise the bar for civic engagement in all our counties,” said Gore. “Together we’ll celebrate local governments as essential intergovernmental partners dedicated all year round to building stronger counties that result in a stronger America.”
