Hon. Alexander Mirabella
Commissioner, Union County, N.J.
About
Commissioner Alexander Mirabella brings experience in business and public service to the Union County Board of County Commissioners. First elected in 1997, he was re-elected in 2021 to serve his ninth three-year term. He has served as Vice Chairman five times and as Chairman for six times, including the first two COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020 and 2021.
During those two years, Mirabella oversaw the County’s wide-ranging efforts to provide residents and first responders with resources to protect themselves and prevent the spread of the virus, including the immediate implementation of contact-free procedures for essential County services and the opening of New Jersey’s first free, county-based, drive-through site for mass testing at Kean University, along with walk-up mobile test sites throughout the county, home tests for the homebound, and the rollout of vaccines beginning in January of 2021.
Mirabella also oversaw the administration of federal CARES Act funds, through which the County distributed millions of meals and provided aid to municipalities and to small businesses, schools, libraries, restaurants, nonprofit organizations, and residents in need of child care respite care, child care and rental assistance.
Under Mirabella’s Chairmanship, Union County also assisted residents with resource fairs and economic assistance after flooding from Tropical Storm Ida devastated parts of the area in September of 2021.
The County also leveraged years of prudent fiscal management to avoid a tax increase and layoffs. Mirabella’s 2021 “Union County Rising” initiative covered programs for COVID-19 testing and vaccination programs, business and economic development, parks improvements, and services reflecting the values of inclusion and acceptance.
In previous years as Chairman, Mirabella was also instrumental in the expansion of Union County parks through Open Space Trust Fund, the expansion of the Office of Veterans Affairs, and the creation of the Office of LGBTQ Affairs. He also developed the Sensory Friendly Theater program, assembled the shared services committee, and focused on infrastructure planning, workforce development, and sustainability measures.
Mirabella is proud to serve on the Board of Trustees of Wenzhou-Kean University in China, and John Cabot University in Italy. He has also been recognized for his support of Union County College and was instrumental in the creation of the Union County Vocational-Technical High Schools. He also organized the annual Columbus Day Italian flag raising event and was honored by the Italian Tribune with the “Christopher Columbus Man of the Year Award.”
Mirabella served on the Roselle Park Borough Council from 1991 to 1996. He graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. with a degree in Economics. He and his wife, Phyllis, have a son, Alexander, and a daughter, Micayla.
