About The Hon. Anthony Capizzi
Judge Capizzi has served as Montgomery County, Ohio Juvenile Court Judge since 2005. He previously served as an Acting Judge for Dayton Municipal Court from 1998-2004 and in private practice for over 25 years. Judge Capizzi was admitted to the Ohio and Federal Bars in 1979, receiving his J.D. from the University of Dayton School of Law and a B.A. from Saint Bonaventure University.
Judge Capizzi has overseen the growth of Juvenile Treatment Court and starting a Juvenile Mental Health Court and Family Treatment Court. He led the initiative to create the Evening Reporting Center, implemented the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative (JDAI), initiated the Pro Se Services program to help those clients that choose to file legal documents without attorney representation, and strengthened the Court’s Reclaiming Futures and Natural Helpers programs to better serve youth and their families in our community. In addition, Judge Capizzi has led the court into the 21st Century technology-wise to streamline the hearing process by providing a more efficient case action procedure.
Judge Capizzi serves as Secretary of the Ohio Supreme Court Judicial College Board of Trustees and as Past-President of the Ohio Juvenile Court Judges Association. He lectures at state and national conferences focusing on judicial leadership, juvenile treatment courts, substance abuse, the roles and responsibilities of guardians ad litem, juveniles’ rights in delinquency court, abuse, neglect and dependency, racial and ethnic disparity, data and information sharing/exchange and mental health issues.
Nationally, Judge Capizzi serves as President-Elect of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and will begin his term as President in July, 2017. He further serves as Chair of the NCJFCJ’s Juvenile Drug Court Training and Technical Assistance Project Advisory Committee. He has served as a Reclaiming Futures Judicial Fellow since 2005 and as Senior Judicial Faculty Director supervising judicial training since 2013. He serves on the National Advisory Committee for the ABA Homeless Youth Legal Network and the Stewards of Change Institute National Board.
Judge Capizzi recently co-authored with Helen Kelly Jones an article, The State of Child Protection and Juvenile Justice, The State of Black Dayton: Opportunities Lost, (Jenell Walton ed., Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio, 2017). In addition, he has authored articles published in the Juvenile and Family Court Journal and in Future Trends in State Courts published by the National Center for State Courts.
